Our Experience with Pearl Street in Boulder, Colorado

Some places stay with you. Boulder, Colorado is one of those places for us.

We met here while attending the University of Colorado. That was more years ago than we’d like to count. However, Pearl Street has been part of our story since the beginning. Furthermore, we live just 30 minutes away now and have made it a goal to come back more often.

Therefore, on the last weekend of March 2026, we did exactly that. In partnership with Visit Boulder, we spent a long weekend eating our way through Pearl Street. Needless to say, it did not disappoint.

A Brief History of Pearl Street

Pearl Street has been the heart of Boulder, Colorado for well over a century. However, it didn’t always look the way it does today.

The street is believed to have been named for the wife of one of Boulder’s 54 founders. Interestingly, the city began discussing the idea of a pedestrian mall as far back as 1963. Therefore, it took over a decade of planning before the mall was ultimately built in 1977 to help revitalize Boulder’s downtown. The result was transformative.

Today, Pearl Street is a four-block pedestrian mall stretching from 11th Street to 15th Street. It was named by Food & Wine magazine as one of the Ten Best Foodie Streets in America. Furthermore, it was named one of the Great Public Spaces in America in 2015. Additionally, with its 50th anniversary coming in 2027, Pearl Street shows no signs of slowing down.

Pearl Street is easy to reach. Boulder, Colorado sits about 30 miles northwest of Denver, roughly a 45-minute drive depending on traffic. From Denver International Airport, expect about an hour by car.

Once in Boulder, Pearl Street is right in the heart of downtown. Street parking and public garages are available on the cross streets surrounding the mall. We recommend arriving early on weekends as spots fill up quickly. If you’re staying at Hotel Boulderado, you won’t need a car at all.

Friday Evening on Pearl Street

Our Friday evening on Pearl Street started the moment we dropped our bags off at the Boulderado Hotel. We headed straight outside to enjoy the warm spring air. We knew we wanted an outside patio and something light to snack on before dinner.

Happy Hour at Gemini

First stop was Gemini for happy hour. It’s one of the best spots on Pearl Street for cocktails and light bites. We ordered the Gemini’s G&T and the Frozen Mezcalita. Both were incredible. However, the real star of the table was the fried artichoke hearts. Order them without hesitation.

All in, happy hour for two came to $46 after tax and tip. Not bad for cocktails and bites!

Dinner at Vinca

From Gemini, we headed to Vinca for dinner. If you enjoy wine, this is your spot. Vinca is known for its award-winning wine list (seriously, hundreds of bottles). We started with the Rustic Bread and Sun-dried Tomato Butter and it was delicious. The perfect way to kick off the meal.

For wine, we ordered two glasses of the 2020 Bordeaux Château de Pez, which paired beautifully with everything that followed. We then ordered the Seared Duck and the Flatiron Wagyu Steak. Both were outstanding. Furthermore, you really can’t go wrong with anything on the menu.

And do not skip dessert. The Grandma’s Apple Strudel was our pick and it was perfect.

All in, dinner for two came to $190.61 after tax and tip. Pearl Street dining comes at a price. But in our opinion, Vinca is worth every penny.

Dessert at Gelato Boy

We ended the night at Gelato Boy. This Boulder-based company has become one of our favorites and you can find their pints all over Colorado. If you’ve never tried their gelato before, the Salty Cookies and Creme and Amaretto Cherry Chip are our go-to flavors.

However, this time around we went for the limited edition Key Lime Pie Cheesecake gelato. One bite and we were instantly transported back to our time in Florida visiting three national parks and touring every Key Lime Pie shop we could find. It was that good. We liked it so much we came back again before the weekend was over.

Saturday Morning On Pearl Street

We didn’t rush Saturday morning. Honestly, that was a first for us in a very long time. We wrapped ourselves in those fluffy white robes and spent a few quiet minutes taking in the view of the Flatiron Mountains right outside our window.

It was lovely. We watched downtown Boulder slowly light up with energy below us. No agenda, no rush. Just coffee, robes, and the Flatirons.

Coffee at OZO Coffee

Eventually we made our way out. OZO Coffee is one of our guilty pleasures. The closest location to us is about 30 minutes away, so whenever we’re nearby we stock up on coffee beans and indulge in a little too much caffeine. Furthermore, they have a fantastic selection of roasted beans — we prefer a good light roast — and their spicy chai oat milk latte is top tier. Highly recommend.

Therefore, we grabbed our coffees and a pastry and took them straight back to the room. The Japanese Grand Prix had aired and we needed to watch our recording. Honestly, we had everything we needed. However, sometimes the best part of a weekend away is doing absolutely nothing.

Taste of Pearl

We were lucky to time our foodie weekend during Pearl Street’s most foodie event of the year. The Taste of Pearl is an annual event hosted by the Downtown Boulder Partnership where 16 restaurants, 16 beverage partners, and 16 retail stores come together for one afternoon.

You stroll from stop to stop, tasting and drinking your way through the best of downtown Boulder. Part food festival, part gallery crawl, part neighborhood exploration. There is truly nothing else like it.

We were invited by the Downtown Boulder Partnership as VIP guests, which also gave us the opportunity to host a giveaway for two General Admission tickets (here’s that video). Furthermore, it was a full afternoon — 4+ hours of walking, eating, drinking, and yes, explaining why we had a massive camera with us everywhere we went.

The standout drink of the afternoon was Boulder Spirits‘ Cherry Sherry Old Fashioned. Absolutely excellent. On the food side, Japango‘s sushi topped with pickled onion was our favorite bite of the day. Similarly, the Chicken Curry Salad from St. Julien Hotel was a highlight too.

We also stumbled across the Savannah Bee Company’s raw honey — simple but seriously good. However, by the end of the afternoon, the Apple Kale Salad from OAK at Fourteenth was exactly what we needed. After hours of rich bites and tastings, we were genuinely craving vegetables.

Therefore, it’s safe to say we were absolutely stuffed by the end of it. Seriously, we could not eat another bite. Well. Until dinner, at least.

Saturday Evening on Pearl Street

We went back to the hotel, kicked our shoes off, and closed our eyes for a quick second — the food coma was coming for us and we knew it. However, Pearl Street has a way of pulling you back out.

We made the decision that sushi was the next move. After that incredible tasting bite from Japango earlier in the day, the choice was easy. It was two blocks away and we were already putting our shoes back on.

Dinner at Japango Boulder

Japango is one of the most well regarded restaurants on Pearl Street. We started with Miso Soup, Vegetable Tempura, and the Crispy Brussels Sprouts with Soy and Shichimi Togarashi. All excellent. The Brussels Sprouts were a standout — bold, crispy, and full of flavor. We then ordered a plate of Tuna Tataki, Wagyu, and New Zealand Salmon nigiri. Everything was fresh and beautifully prepared.

To wash it all down, we ordered the Koshihikari Echigo Beer, a rice lager from Japan’s first microbrewery. The perfect pairing for a sushi dinner.

Dinner for two came to $105. For the quality and variety of what we ordered, we thought it was great value.

Sunday Morning on Pearl Street

We didn’t have to go far for our final meal of the weekend. Spruce Farm & Fish is right off the lobby of Hotel Boulderado. It was the perfect way to close out a weekend on Pearl Street — no checkout rush, no searching for a spot, just a short walk downstairs (in our elevated pajamas, no less).

Brunch at Spruce Farm & Fish

The inside of Spruce Farm & Fish is super cute. The original brickwork from the building is visible everywhere you look. You can feel the historic charm of Hotel Boulderado the moment you sit down. It’s a great reminder that the building has been a Boulder landmark since 1909.

We both ordered the Classic Breakfast (two eggs, bacon, home fries, and toast) at $15 each. Simple, well executed, and exactly what we needed after a full weekend of eating. And because it’s an unwritten rule, we also ordered the buttermilk pancakes. If pancakes are on the menu, you order them. No exceptions.

The coffee was excellent and they sent us off with a to-go cup on the way out. Honestly, the perfect ending to a weekend on Pearl Street.

Our Final Walk Down Pearl Street

We checked out of Hotel Boulderado but we weren’t ready to leave just yet. We had a few more stops along Pearl Street that we hadn’t had time to hit yet, so we dropped our luggage off in the car and started our walk.

First stop was Ku Cha House of Tea. We ordered a Cherry Sakura tea over ice and a boba milk tea. Both were the perfect mid-morning sip before continuing our stroll. If you have a few minutes, don’t rush out. In fact, in the back of Ku Cha House of Tea is a lovely sitting area with a few tables and a small water feature, all encased under a glass ceiling. It’s a peaceful little hidden gem right on Pearl Street.

From there we wandered into The North Face store. Katie needed a new windbreaker and found one on the clearance rack. Solid score. We also spotted a shirt featuring a beautifully drawn collection of North Face icons. It’s very cool. Needless to say, into the bag it went.

We kept walking, stumbling into Patagonia, Stio, and then into Montbell — which genuinely surprised us. Furthermore, it’s their only store in the entire United States. If you’re not familiar, Montbell is a Japanese outdoor brand with hundreds of locations worldwide. Moreover, their gear is extremely high quality. We both walked out with matching lightweight windbreakers for an upcoming trip to Italy. We also earned a sticker for completing a scavenger hunt inside the store. Worth it.

However, all good things must come to an end. From there we made our way back to the car. Our foodie weekend on Pearl Street was officially over. But honestly, we’re already planning the next one.

More Great Restaurants on Pearl Street

Lunch

Pearl Poke is a casual poke bowl spot just off Pearl Street. Quick, fresh, and a great lighter option in the middle of a big food weekend.

C Burger / C Bar is Pearl Street’s most interesting burger spot. Their beef is 100% Colorado regeneratively raised — same quality as their fine dining sister restaurants OAK at Fourteenth and Corrida, just in a much more casual format. The self-pour tap wall at C Bar is a fun touch too.

Barchetta is a retro-modern pizzeria just off Pearl Street on Walnut Street with thin-crust pies, a self-pour tap wall, and a relaxed atmosphere. A great casual option.

Happy Hour

Postino Boulder is a wine café right on Pearl Street with an extensive wine list and a bruschetta board that’s hard to beat. It’s a great casual spot for an afternoon glass.

Hapa Sushi is a Pearl Street institution with a Japanese and Hawaiian fusion menu and one of the best happy hours around. Two for $12 sushi rolls, discounted appetizers, and sake cocktails. Hard to argue with that.

Dinner

Casa Juani is one of the most exciting new restaurants on Pearl Street, opening in early 2026. It’s a Spanish seafood restaurant from two former Frasca chefs. Early buzz is very strong. It’s on our list for next time.

OAK at Fourteenth brings wood-fired New American cooking to Pearl Street with an inventive bar program and a kale salad that has earned a cult following. A strong dinner option.

Rio Grande Mexican Restaurant is just off Pearl Street and a Boulder institution. It’s also where Katie had her first mango margarita. She still talks about it. Frequently.

More Great Shops on Pearl Street

The food is the star, but the shopping on Pearl Street is worth slowing down for. A few favorites beyond what we’ve already mentioned:

Boulder Book Store is one of the best independent bookstores in the country. Three floors of books, employee recommendations, a kids section, and an in-house coffee shop. Give yourself more time than you think you need.

Peppercorn is a kitchen and homegoods store packed floor to ceiling with hard-to-find gadgets, cookbooks, European condiments, and beautiful tableware. Dangerous for anyone who loves to cook.

Liberty Puzzles is a Boulder original. These handcrafted wooden jigsaw puzzles are made right here in Boulder using maple plywood and archival inks. No two pieces are alike and each puzzle includes hand-drawn whimsy pieces. They also offer factory tours. A great gift or a great excuse to stay in on a rainy night.

Final Thoughts

Pearl Street is one of those places that reminds you why food is so much more than just a meal. A stroll between courses. A late-night gelato after you said you were full. And yes, stumbling into a store you didn’t plan to visit and walking out with something you didn’t know you needed.

Overall, we had an amazing weekend in Boulder, full of great food and fantastic shopping. We want to thank Visit Boulder for the invitation to come back to a city that means so much to us both. It was long overdue and we are already planning the next one.

So if you make it to Pearl Street, we hope this guide helps you eat well, wander often, and leave with a very full stomach.
