What is Goldens in Golden?
Goldens in Golden is an annual event in Golden, Colorado, celebrating Golden Retrievers and the people who love them. It takes place every February in honor of International Golden Retriever Day, with the 2026 event happening on Saturday, February 7.
During the event, thousands of dogs and their humans gather in downtown Golden. The main activity centers around Washington Avenue, the Welcome Arch, and Parfet Park.
The day includes group photo moments, vendor booths, dog-friendly activities, and plenty of time to wander. Most people come to walk, socialize, and enjoy the atmosphere rather than follow a strict schedule.
Although Golden Retrievers are the focus, the event welcomes all friendly, leashed dogs. As a result, you will see dogs of every breed alongside a sea of Goldens.
Goldens in Golden is free to attend and open to the public. However, its popularity means crowds are large and planning ahead matters.

Who Are We and Why We Go
We’re Katie and Joe. Most of the time, we are traveling the world and exploring U.S. National Parks. That is the focus of our work and the content we create year-round.
You can find our travel and National Park content across social media and the internet, including Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, YouTube, Threads, this website, and Patreon.
However, we live just a few miles from Golden, Colorado. We also love dogs. Because of that, we decided to attend Goldens in Golden for the first time in 2024.
We returned again in 2025. Each year, we documented the event through photos and short-form video. Not surprisingly, dog content performs well. Who does not love a great photo of a happy dog?
Because of this, our Goldens in Golden content has been widely shared. It has appeared across Martha Stewart Living, Complex, Wheel of Fortune, ABC News, The Today Show, and more.
There is a good chance you have already seen our work. If you searched for this event online, our photos or videos may have been part of what you found.
Because we attend regularly and document the event from start to finish, we understand what first-time visitors need to know. This guide reflects what we have learned by being there, camera in hand, year after year.

When and Where Is Goldens in Golden 2026?
Goldens in Golden 2026 takes place on Saturday, February 7 in Golden, Colorado. The event runs from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
- Golden is roughly 25 minutes west of Denver, Colorado
- Golden is roughly 30 minutes south of Boulder, Colorado
- Golden is roughly 40 minuets west of Denver International Airport (DEN)
- Golden is roughly 70 minutes south of Fort Collins, Colorado
- Golden is roughly 80 minutes north of Colorado Springs, Colorado
The event is free to attend and open to the public, which helps explain its popularity. As a result, crowds build quickly throughout the morning.
Goldens in Golden happens in downtown Golden, Colorado. Most activities take place along Washington Avenue, near the Welcome to Golden Arch, and inside Parfet Park.
This area becomes pedestrian-only during the event. Streets close to vehicle traffic, and walking is the primary way to move around.
Most visitors spend their time strolling, stopping for photos, and gathering near the arch. Others settle into Parfet Park to relax, socialize, and take a break from the crowds.
Because everything happens in a compact downtown area, movement can feel slow. Arriving early makes it easier to enjoy the event before peak crowds arrive.

Can Dogs That Aren’t Golden Retrievers Attend?
Yes. Goldens in Golden welcomes all friendly, leashed dogs, not just Golden Retrievers.
Golden Retrievers are the stars of the event. However, dogs of every breed attend alongside them. You will see small dogs, large dogs, mixed breeds, and everything in between.
We once saw a Neapolitan Mastiff with a shirt on that said “I identify as a Golden Retriever” and loved it!
That said, this event is busy. Crowds are dense, noise levels are high, and personal space can disappear quickly. Because of this, only bring dogs that are comfortable around other dogs and large groups of people.
Leashes are required at all times. Owners are also expected to clean up after their dogs and remain mindful of others sharing the space.
Since this is a gathering of Golden Retrievers, it is important to be respectful. Avoid pushing to the front of the Welcome to Golden sign during group photos if your dog is not a Golden.
If your dog becomes overwhelmed, stepping off Washington Avenue or taking a break in Parfet Park can help. Sometimes, a short pause makes the experience better for everyone.

What to Expect at Goldens in Golden
Goldens in Golden is busy, loud, and full of energy. Thousands of people and dogs gather in a small downtown area over a short window of time.
Crowds form early and grow quickly. Walking speeds slow down, especially along Washington Avenue and near the Welcome to Golden Arch. Patience is essential.
Noise levels are higher than usual. Expect barking, cheering, music, and general crowd noise throughout the morning. Some dogs love the excitement. Others may need breaks.
Weather plays a big role in the experience. February conditions in Golden can vary widely from year to year.
In 2024, we were covered in snow and dealing with very cold temperatures. In 2025, the weather was dry with temperatures in the mid-40s. In 2026, temperatures reached the mid-50s, making it the most comfortable year we have experienced so far.
Because of this variation, checking the forecast matters. Dress in layers and plan for winter conditions, even if the day starts mild. Here’s a list of fall hiking gear and layers that we’d recommend. Comfortable footwear is also important, especially if snow or ice is present.
Parking and arrival time also make a big difference. If you want to avoid parking stress and heavy crowds, arrive well before 9:00 AM. We plan to be in Golden around 7:30 AM on Saturday, which allows time to park, walk downtown, and enjoy the event before peak crowds arrive. Hopefully find a cup of coffee!
Most people come to walk, take photos, and soak in the atmosphere. This is not a structured festival with scheduled activities every hour. The experience is about wandering, socializing, and enjoying the moment.
If you prefer a calmer experience, arrive early. The first hour is usually the most relaxed. By mid-morning, the event reaches peak crowd levels.

Together, these events make it easy to turn Goldens in Golden into a full day or even a full weekend in Golden. Whether you arrive early or stay late, there are plenty of ways to keep the celebration going.

What Time Are the Group Portraits Under the Welcome To Golden Sign?
Group portraits under the Welcome to Golden sign take place three times during the event at 10:00 AM, 11:00 AM, and 12:00 PM.
These photos are one of the most popular moments of the day, and the area fills up quickly. If you want to be in the front rows, arriving early is essential. People begin gathering well before each scheduled photo, especially for the first portrait of the morning.
Do not expect to arrive right at the scheduled time and still get a prime spot. By then, the crowd is usually several rows deep. If being close to the sign matters to you, be intentional about where you stand and politely but confidently hold your space.
If you miss one session, later portraits can still be an option. Some people leave after the first or second photo, which can create a bit more room.
As always, be respectful of those around you. Keep dogs leashed, follow guidance from event staff, and remember that this moment is centered around Golden Retrievers.

Where Is the “Welcome to Golden” Arch?
The “Welcome to Golden” arch is located on Washington Avenue in downtown Golden, near the center of the event area.
- Address: 1100 Washington Avenue, Golden, CO 80401
- GPS Coordinates: 39.7452° N, 105.2210° W
This spot is one of the busiest areas during Goldens in Golden and serves as the backdrop for official group photos and media coverage. Washington Avenue is closed to vehicle traffic during the event, so the arch is accessible on foot only.

Getting to Golden, Parking, and Shuttles
Goldens in Golden draws a huge crowd. Traffic into Golden builds early, and delays are common.
In past years, we have seen traffic backed up for miles. On one occasion, the line to enter Golden stretched close to two miles. Because of this, arriving early is critical.
If you want to avoid traffic stress, plan to arrive well before 9:00 AM. Earlier arrivals have an easier time parking and moving around downtown before peak congestion begins.
Free Shuttle Service (New for 2026)
For 2026, a free shuttle system is in place, and it makes a noticeable difference. This option helps reduce downtown traffic and parking pressure.
Visitors can park for free at The Splash at Fossil Trace (3-miles from downtown Golden) and take a shuttle directly into Golden. Shuttles run from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM and drop riders near Parfet Park, close to the main event area.
Dogs are welcome on the shuttle. This makes it one of the easiest ways to attend the event with your pup.
Using the shuttle removes the need to search for limited downtown parking. It is the option we recommend most for a smoother arrival.
Rideshare and Downtown Parking
If you plan to use a rideshare service, use the designated drop-off and pick-up area near the Clear Creek Parking Lot at 907 Archer Street. This location offers quick access to downtown without adding to congestion along Washington Avenue.
Driving directly into downtown is possible, but availability is limited. Streets close to traffic during the event, and parking fills quickly. Be prepared for delays if you choose this option.
Planning ahead will save time and frustration. Early arrival or using the shuttle makes the start of the day far more enjoyable.

Where to Stay in and Around Golden, Colorado
Goldens in Golden brings thousands of visitors to a small town. Because of this, accommodations fill quickly. Booking early makes a big difference.
If you plan to attend with a dog, focus on pet-friendly lodging first. Not all hotels in the area allow pets, and availability can be limited during the event weekend.
Staying in Golden
Staying in Golden is the most convenient option. You can walk to the event, avoid traffic, and easily take breaks throughout the day.
Many pet-friendly hotels and short-term rentals are located within a short distance of Washington Avenue. These fill up fastest, especially those within walking distance of downtown.
If walkability matters to you, prioritize staying directly in Golden.
Here are a few options to consider:
- $$$: The Eddy Taproom & Hotel and the Table Mountain Inn
- $$: The Golden Hotel, an Ascend Collection Hotel
- $: Not Available
Staying Near Golden
If lodging in Golden is unavailable, nearby areas work well. Look at options near West Colfax, Red Rocks, or Lakewood.
These locations offer more availability and are still a short drive from downtown Golden. They also pair well with the free shuttle option for event day.
Here are a few options to consider:
- $$$: Origin Red Rocks, a Wyndham Hotel
- $$: Hampton Inn Denver West Federal Center
- $: Hampton Inn Denver-West/Golden

Staying in Denver
Denver is another option, especially if you are planning a longer trip. However, expect a longer drive on event morning.
If you stay in Denver, plan to leave early and/or use the shuttle system. Traffic into Golden builds quickly on Saturday morning.
Here are a few options to consider:
- $$$: The Ramble Hotel and The Ritz-Carlton, Denver
- $$: Hotel Indigo Denver Downtown and The Westin Denver Downtown
- $: Budget Inn Denver Downtown
Tips for Booking with Dogs
Always confirm pet policies before booking. Some properties limit the number of dogs or charge additional fees.
Look for accommodations that offer easy outdoor access. This makes early morning and late evening walks much easier during a busy weekend.

Where to Eat During Goldens in Golden
Golden may be a small town, but it has a strong food and drink scene. During Goldens in Golden, many restaurants, breweries, and cafes participate with dog-friendly patios and event-day specials.
That said, it will be very busy. Downtown Golden fills quickly, and restaurant wait times can be long, especially from mid-morning through early afternoon. Being prepared for crowds and slower service will make the day more enjoyable.
If you are attending with a dog, outdoor seating matters. Many restaurants allow dogs on patios, which makes it easier to take breaks without leaving the event area.
Because crowds peak during the day, eating early or later in the afternoon often works best. Walking a few blocks away from Washington Avenue can also lead to shorter waits.

Several grocery stores sit just outside downtown Golden. These are convenient stops before heading into the event or after leaving town.
- Safeway: 1701 Jackson St, Golden, CO 80401
Dining Tips for Event Day
Expect the longest restaurant waits between late morning and early afternoon. This is when crowds are at their peak.
If you want a quieter experience, plan to eat before 8:00 AM, at your hotel, or after the main event ends. Even a short walk away from Washington Avenue can make a noticeable difference.
From quick coffee stops to post-event dinners, Golden has no shortage of options. Choosing the right timing can make all the difference.

15 Tips Before You Arrive for Goldens in Golden
A little preparation goes a long way at Goldens in Golden. This event is fun, but it is busy and fast-moving.
- Arrive Early: Traffic builds quickly, and parking fills fast. If possible, arrive well before 9:00 AM or plan to use the shuttle system.
- Consider the Shuttle: The free shuttle is one of the easiest ways to avoid traffic and parking stress. It also drops you close to the heart of the event and is dog-friendly.
- Dress for the Weather: February weather in Golden changes year to year. Dress in layers and be prepared for cold, snow, or sunshine. Comfortable shoes matter, especially if sidewalks are icy or wet.
- Bring Essentials for Your Dog: Pack water, a collapsible bowl, waste bags, and treats. Paw protection can help if sidewalks are cold, icy, or treated.
- Know Your Dog: This event is crowded and loud. Only bring dogs that are comfortable around other dogs, tight spaces, and noise. If your dog feels overwhelmed, step away from Washington Avenue or take a break in Parfet Park or along Clear Creek.
- Pick Up After Your Pup: Use the designated waste stations throughout the event area. Clean paths keep the event enjoyable for everyone and help protect Golden’s waterways and natural environment.
- Respect the Event: Golden Retrievers are the focus of the day. Be mindful during group photos and avoid pushing to the front if your dog is not a Golden.
- Plan Food and Breaks Ahead: Restaurant wait times can be long during the day. Have a plan for meals, snacks, or quick grocery stops so hunger does not add stress.
- Hydrate Responsibly: Bring a reusable water bottle and a collapsible dog bowl. Many public water fountains are turned off in winter, but most restaurants will refill bottles at no cost.
- Keep Expectations Flexible: You will not see everything in one visit. The best experiences often come from wandering, people-watching, and enjoying the atmosphere.
- Keep Paws on Paths: Stick to marked walkways and designated event zones to reduce wear on Golden’s natural areas. If you head out for a hike before or after the event, dogs should remain leashed and on trail. And always clean up after your pup.
- Check Out Golden’s Dog Parks: If your dog needs off-leash time before or after the event, Golden has nearby dog parks that are a great way to burn off energy. Some dog-friendly breweries are located close to these parks, making them easy stops.
- Share the Space and Respect Wildlife: Give other dogs and humans room to enjoy the festivities. Most areas are leashed spaces. Golden borders wildlife habitats, so keep dogs close and enjoy the environment responsibly.
- Have Fun: Goldens in Golden is meant to be joyful. Let go of rigid plans and enjoy the chaos, the dogs, and the small moments that make the day special.
- Find Us in the Crowd: We’ll be out photographing the event throughout the day. If you spot us, say hello. There’s a good chance your pup might end up with a great photo from the experience.
