What is Decathlon?

Decathlon is a globally recognized French sporting goods brand and the world’s largest retailer in the industry, with over 1,700 stores across more than 60 countries.

While still growing its presence in the U.S., Decathlon is known for making high-quality, affordable gear for a wide range of sports and outdoor activities.

By keeping research, development, production, and supply chain operations in-house, Decathlon can offer innovative, performance-driven products at accessible prices, making outdoor exploration and sports more accessible for everyone.

When I was living in Berlin, Germany I walked by Decathlon Alexanderplatz every single day on my way to my office. I found out that it was the only place in Berlin that I was able to find Red POWERADE and for that reason I returned often.

Decathlon Forclaz Men’s MT100 Hooded Down Puffer Jacket Overview

  • The Forclaz Men’s MT100 Hooded Down Puffer Jacket by Decathlon is designed for cold-weather backpacking and everyday use.
  • Filled with Responsible Down Standard (RDS) certified down, it offers warmth in temperatures ranging from 23°F (-5°C) to 41°F (5°C).
  • Weighing approximately 10.5 ounces in size L, the jacket is lightweight and easily packs into its left-hand pocket for convenient storage.
  • The outer fabric is treated to be water-repellent, providing protection against light rain and snow.
Sturdy fabric means I have no fear of snagging it on old fencing

Pros:

  • Warmth: The MT100 is filled with Responsible Down Standard (RDS) certified down, providing a fill power of 800 CUIN. CUIN is not a term that you usually hear but it measures a jacket’s insulation capacity and air-trapping efficiency. This high-quality insulation ensures comfort in temperatures ranging from 23°F to 41°F, making it suitable for various cold-weather conditions.
  • Lightweight and Compact: Weighing approximately 10.5 ounces in size L, the jacket is designed to be lightweight without compromising on warmth. Its compact design allows it to be easily packed into its left-hand pocket, saving space in your backpack. When packed-up it can also be used as a pillow for camping trips.
  • Water Repellency: The outer fabric is treated to be water-repellent, providing protection against light rain and snow. However, for prolonged exposure to wet conditions, pairing it with a waterproof shell (like the Quechua Men’s MH150) is recommended.
  • Durability: Constructed with a 100% polyamide outer fabric weighing 35 g/sqm and 15 denier, the jacket is designed to resist abrasion and withstand the rigors of outdoor use. If you’ve ever owned a puffy jacket, getting it snagged is one of your biggest fears. I’ve been wearing this jacket for almost a month straight, I’ve taken flights with it, pushed it into backpacks, and wrapped it around my waist when I did not need it. Not a single snag or rip to be found. The material is much stronger than what I’ve found on comparable jackets from other brands.
  • Practical Pockets: It features two zipped hand pockets, offering convenient storage for essentials whilst also keeping your hands warm on the colder outings.
  • Minimal Branding: The jacket features limited branding, with only a small label on the left sleeve, giving it a clean, versatile look that’s easy to pair with other outdoor gear without loud logos or branding.
  • Protected Zipper Design: The jacket’s zipper is designed with a protective cover, preventing it from snagging on beard hairs or other fabrics, adding comfort and convenience for wearers with facial hair.

Cons:

  • Limited Water Resistance: While the jacket is water-repellent, it isn’t fully waterproof, so it may need a shell in heavy rain.
    • Solution: Decathlon makes many different jackets, if you need something more resistant, check out the Quechua MH150 or the MH500 to layer on top.
  • Sizing Runs Small: Some users have reported that the jacket runs on the small side, so you may need to size up, especially if layering.
    • This is really not a con, but something that you need to be cognitive of when ordering. I’m 5’10” (178cm), weigh 185lbs (85kg), and usually wear a Large / XL jacket. I ordered an XL and it’s plenty big to wear a sweater underneath without an issue.
  • Not Ideal for Extreme Cold: With a comfort range down to 23°F, it may not be warm enough for extremely low temperatures without additional layers.
    • Solution: Decathlon makes many different jackets, if you need something warmer, check out the MT500 or the MT900.
  • Limited Color Options: Depending on availability, the jacket may have limited color choices. As of the writing of this post, the jacket is available in Black, Olive Green, and Asphalt Blue.
  • No Hood Adjustability: The hood is fixed and lacks adjustability, which could impact fit, especially in windy conditions.
  • Lack of Internal Pockets: The jacket doesn’t include internal pockets, which can be inconvenient for securely stashing valuables like a wallet or phone, especially in rougher conditions.
Protected Zipper means no snagged beard hairs
